movements, set on the beach with the sound of the ocean's waves as the score. How does one body long for another? How do you miss something you've never had? How does the body experience the tension of distance? Using landscape, color, sound and dance, the performance moves along with an absent score of bilingual poetry, creating an abstract sculptural duet. The sections of poem are: “Your ‘self’ is a snake in the day and a fish at night” “We are poor ants, collecting love” This video compiles the performances for the camera: movements using the rhythm of counting in sets of 10 in combination with the poems, and my hands sculpting 30 phallic clay pieces. By combining these two very different gestures, and working within the structure of numbers and text, I see room for intimacy and humor around performing these actions for no audience. The gestures are absurd and demonstrative, and come close to traditional uses but miss them narrowly, change them, or do them wrong. The questions are: how should I use this carpet, how do you use this carpet, how do they use this carpet, how close can I become to this carpet? The performance project consists of an installation comprised of physical representations of research, a significant presence of cameras to emphasize documentation, and an hour long performance that follows an audio visual score that guides the entire work. The work is in response to the Iranian Oral History Archive, produced by the Harvard Library, that is host to interviews with Iranian individuals connected to political movements in Iran, archived and transcribed. “The collection consists of the personal accounts of 134 individuals who played major roles in or were eyewitnesses to important political events in Iran from the 1920s to the 1980s. Of these, 118 narratives have been digitized and are available to researchers through this database. The collection provides scholars and practitioners the opportunity to listen to and read the personal accounts of many of Iran's former political leaders as they recall the times and events that shaped their lives and the life of their country.” LINK TO THE ARCHIVE
